Six awards for design and innovation. This much has won Allermuir’s Axyl chair designed by Benjamin Hubert from his studio Layer.
During this year's prestigious NeoCon event in Chicago, Axyl was presented with a Silver Best of NeoCon Award for Bar Stools, the Innovation Award for Guest Seating and also a HIP Honour.
As well as being well received in North America, Axyl has made its mark in the UK, after winning a Design Guild Mark and Red Dot Design award earlier this year. More recently, Axyl has won the Core77 Design Award.
Axyl utilises a strong geometric design language that is entirely original yet draws on familiar references, such as the A-frame typology and a Mid-Century Danish wrap around shell. The intensive project including high tooling investment was completed in 2 years from sketch to full production.
The chair shells and stool tops are available in a variety of low-impact materials, including recycled wood fibre and recycled nylon; and the recycled agglomerate “recon” foam used for the optional cushion is made from chipping down foam off-cuts and then forming them back together, offering an efficient way of re-using waste product from the furniture industry.
Axyl chairs employ a unique recycled die-cast aluminium Y-frame silhouette topped with a softly geometric injection moulded shell, which is designed to embrace the sitter, and an optional cushion. Axyl chairs stack four-high to enable easy storage. The barstool shares the same characterful design language and is entirely symmetrical with double waterfall edges on the plastic seat.
